Thursday night’s political stare-down featured US President Joe Biden and presidential nominee Trump going head-to-head in the first presidential debate on the road to November’s elections. Both participants have their parties backing them as the nominees for the presidential elections. Everyone was glued to the spectacle, from the US and elsewhere, including many from the crypto industry.
However, crypto enthusiasts were left disappointed because nothing about the industry was mentioned. While the nominees spoke about issues like abortion, the economy, and climate change, nothing about digital assets came up. The weeks preceding the decade riled up the crypto industry as Trump made his favorable intentions toward the industry clear.
He declared he would be “the crypto president” and make the US the center of crypto development and be very friendly toward Bitcoin mining firms. Naturally, crypto enthusiasts expected Trump to bring up anything related to digital assets – but no. There were hopes that he would call Biden out on his anti-crypto stance and how the SEC, under Biden’s presidency, has derailed crypto from going mainstream in the country.
The presidential nominees instead argued about other issues, sometimes getting personal and calling each other out for things that many may say are inconsequential to the elections. For instance, Trump and Biden talked about who the better golfer is and how that makes them fitter than the other to lead the free world.
Other insults included Biden saying, “You have the morals of an alley cat.” Trump took jabs at Biden, calling him out on his sometimes incoherent speech, “I really don’t know what he said at the end of that sentence. I don’t think he knows what he said either.” And that is a major concern going into the elections, as many think Biden’s apparent declining cognitive function leaves many voters worried. Besides the incoherent speech, Biden’s speech also seemed raspy, which was due to him having a cold and a sore throat.
A CNN poll found that 67% of people who viewed the debate felt Trump won the showdown.
