Meet T-Stitch: A Simple Yet Efficient Artificial Intelligence Technique to Improve the Sampling Efficiency with Little or No Generation Degradation

Diffusion probabilistic models (DPMs) have long been a cornerstone of AI image generation, but their computational demands have been a significant drawback. This paper introduces a novel technique, T-Stitch, which offers a clever solution to this problem. By enhancing the efficiency of DPMs without compromising image quality, T-Stitch revolutionizes the field of AI image generation.

T-Stitch harnesses the power of smaller, computationally cheaper DPMs by strategically combining them with larger models. The core insight is that different DPMs trained on the same data tend to produce similar representations, especially in the early stages of image generation. This means we can start the process with a smaller DPM to quickly generate the basic image structure and then switch to a larger DPM later to refine the finer details.

Why does this work? Smaller DPMs often excel at capturing the overall structure of an image in the early steps, while larger DPMs are adept at adding high-frequency detail in the later stages. By cleverly stitching together their outputs, T-Stitch reduces computation time. Since the smaller, faster model performs the first steps, there’s a significant boost in generation speed.

Extensive experiments demonstrate T-Stitch’s effectiveness across various model architectures and sampling techniques. Remarkably, it can even be applied seamlessly to popular models like Stable Diffusion. In some cases, it not only accelerates image generation but also improves the alignment between the provided text prompt and the output image. 

Importantly, T-Stitch complements existing efficiency-boosting methods, offering better speed and quality trade-offs than using a large DPM alone.

T-Stitch elegantly leverages the hidden potential of smaller diffusion models to make image generation faster. This technique brings significant benefits to the world of AI art without requiring any retraining. As AI models continue to scale in size, T-Stitch offers a practical solution for users needing both speed and quality in their image generation tasks.

T-Stitch does have a few limitations. It requires access to a smaller DPM trained on the same data as the large model. Additionally, using an extra model increases memory usage slightly. Finally, the speedup achievable with T-Stitch is partially dependent on the efficiency of the small model itself, so the benefits are greatest when the smaller model is significantly faster than the large one.
